Yes Day at The Ekka

Well, as close to a “Yes Day” that my kids will ever see! Our lovely friends Ally and Chris nominated us to have a “Day at The Ekka on the ABC” and we won! I have never taken the kids to the Ekka, knowing it would cost a small fortune to actually do all the things they would want to do, and buy a few showbags and food. It was so unbelievably lovely to be able to say YES to almost everything they asked for. I got to be FUN MUM for a day!! Woo!!

Included in the prize was entry for me and the four kids, $200 in rides vouchers, $200 in food vouchers and three showbags for the kids to share! The only day we could make it work, and for Marty and Thomas to come as well, was the final day, today. Lots of planning and logistics took place, the weather was glorious, and the kids were all super excited!

We arrived just after 9am, and after popping to the ABC studios to pick up our vouchers, we decided to hit up the rides first while the crowds were still low. We had no waiting time in any lines which was unreal! The kids loved the Giant Slide, the Break Dance, the chair swing, and we all went on the Ferris Wheel.

The food hasn’t changed much in the last 20+ years since I had been! Dagwood Dogs and Fairy Floss are still Ekka staples. Growing up in Kelvin Grove, only a couple of kilometers from the Ekka, we used to go every year. It has changed a lot of course in the last four decades since I started going (yikes!!) but some things stay the same.

I did let the kids go a little crazy with the showbags. It was fun to just say yes to so much when, in all honesty, a lot of the time I have to say no as I can’t afford it. It was such a gift not to stress about money for the day. I decided since we were having so much paid for us already, I would splash out on the showbags and a few other little trinkets.

The Bertie Beetle Bag – another Ekka tradition!

We spent a bit of time checking out some of the free exhibits and even ran in to the people who Chance and Darby used to do Robotics with! Chance has grown about a foot since he last saw his instructor a couple of years ago. I had to get a photo 🙂

our old Robotics friends and lots of fun checking out the free stuff

We were also given a voucher for strawberry sundaes which is an Ekka staple. We were starting to get a bit tired by this stage so we wrapped things up around 2pm.

Strawberries and cream, mega nuggets, fun times

We really had such a wonderful time. I’m so grateful to Ally and Chris for all the lovely things they said about the kids and I on the radio. And obviously very thankful the the ABC for their very generous prize! I’m not sure when we will be back again, but we made some wonderful memories today.

An amazing day!!
