Three years ago today, Marty and I met on the corner of Fourth Ave and Brighton Rd at Sandgate, and made our nervous way to Mr Henderson. I say nervous, but I myself was quite terrified. After putting myself “out there” the previous year and getting spectacularly roasted, I was very wary and, okay, skeptical, that I was about to meet anyone special. How wonderfully wrong I was.
Our first date consisted of over three hours of chatting and sharing some pretty deep stuff. I was a bit guarded, but Marty was so honest and open and kind that it didn’t take long for me to open up also. It was such a lovely first meeting, and I was so happy when it seemed from fairly early on that we were both very interested, and very much on the same page.
It hasn’t been easy, but juggling logistics has been the challenge, rather than any angst or insecurities or hurt feelings or wondering or second-guessing. It’s such a lovely thing to be in an adult relationship with another like-minded adult, and luckily, logistics and organisation is my jam!
A couple of months ago we discovered that Birds of Tokyo were playing in Brisbane on the last weekend in October. We have been wanting to see these guys play for ages, so we went ahead and booked the tickets, then as a happy coincidence we realised it was around our anniversary! We booked some accommodation (cheap and cheerful a bit dodgy) and our very dear friends Nic and Charli accepted the challenge of spending the night here with their two kids and my four!!! (Thanks again guys!!)
We arrived fairly late at the accommodation, and decided to have some wine and cheese before we headed in for the show. Marty offered to get the wine glasses out, only to discover there was a single, dirty champagne flute, so we had to settle for coffee cups instead!
I have seen a few awesome Aussie bands live, and some international bands, in my time (okay, so I’ve seen The Whitlams a LOT of times) and this concert was definitely up there as one of my favourites!!
They were all just so happy to be up on stage, and they gave everything to every song. It was just so fantastic and we were so thrilled to be there.
What was even better, was that they were all finished by just after 10:30pm!! Talk about knowing your audience! 🙂 We walked back to the apartment, eating a Magnum ice cream on the way, and actually slept very well after such a great day.
Today is our actual anniversary, and the kids wanted to celebrate with us, so we headed down to the waterfront for ice cream!
It has been such a wonderful three years, getting to know Marty and his lovely family, and we are all looking forward to all that is to come.
